Meet one of our wonderful members, Laurie! She has worked so hard over the last couple years and is a true inspiration for our members and our staff. Check out why she loves SOF and what it has brought to her life.
Name: Laurie Nelson
Hometown: Lansing, MI
Occupation: Hair Stylist/Colorist
What are your interests, hobbies, and talents outside of SOF?
I am the poster child for introverts. I love being home and doing nothing special. I enjoy watching Netflix or cooking. My husband and I do not have any children, but we do have two cats that make the most amazing snuggle buddies. I love going on vacation. Put me on a beach with a drink that has an umbrella in it and I am the happiest person you’ll ever know.
Tell us about your sports and fitness background.
I was on the pom pon squad in high school. We would do half time dance routines at the varsity basketball games, along with routines at pep rallies and the occasional competition. In the spring, I was on the track team. I ran the 4×100 and 4×200 relays and did long jump events. I really wasn’t that good! (hahaha!!!)
I was mostly on the team to socialize with friends and stay flexible and mobile until pom pon started back up since the sports were held in opposite seasons. I didn’t participate in sports for the fitness aspect, I did it to be a part of something. So when high school ended, so did my fitness! I did the mediocre jog around the neighborhood and ab workout occasionally. But by no means would I say I stuck to a specific fitness routine.
When did you first start coming to SOF?
If I remember correctly, I believe it was July of 2013.
How did you first get exposed to SOF? How did your first couple workouts go?
I actually had walked in long before 2013 and signed up for a trial membership. I really wanted to get into a fitness routine since I was starting to jiggle more than I really wanted to! Right around that time, the company I worked for posted that they were working with another local business and giving us the opportunity to sign up for a “fitness challenge.” It was an 8-week challenge that along with the classes, nutritional advice and guidance would also be given. Since the price was right, and other co-workers were taking part, I decided to do that instead of a trial at SOF.
After the 8-week challenge, I was seeing results and decided to stay on as a member. As time went on, different instructors came in and the format of the training sessions changed. Movement modifications were frowned upon, and I started to get nervous that I was going to hurt myself. So after looking at other facilities around, I decided to head back over to SOF because a friend of mine had become a member and had nothing but good things to say.
The first couple of workouts were horrible! They were so hard! (hahaha!) I questioned why I was there and if I was going to be able to keep up. I felt so out of shape and really questioned whether or not I would ever get better. But having a friend there made it better. Support was what I needed, and along with him, the trainers took me under their very strong and nurturing wings.
What is your favorite and least favorite movement/workout?
I really could do without sled pushes, reverse lunges or split squat jumps. I LOVE anything that has to do with the barbell. I always feel really strong with the barbell, even if it doesn’t have a lot of weight on it! How can you not feel bad ass holding a barbell?!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting State of Fitness? Before/After
I am the strongest I have ever been. I have learned a lot about how to be challenged in the workouts, yet also know it’s ok to not push myself to injury. I really want to train for longevity. So if one day I can use a #53 kettlebell for swings, great. If the next workout #44 feels better, then so be it! Just getting up and moving is the only thing I absolutely require of myself every bday!
As I get older, I recognize the importance of clean eating. I have become much more aware of the food I put into my body and what it is composed of. I do this mostly with the strength, knowledge, and support of my SOF fitness friends and trainers! I am by no means perfect. I love anything dark chocolate and would describe myself as a burger and fries kind of girl. I have to think extra hard about getting my veggies in because they are not my “go to” when it comes to food.
I have a great appreciation of food preparation. I pick a day at the beginning of the week and plan out and prepare my meals for the week. There is much less of an opportunity for me to eat things that are bad for me if I have good food already prepared. I do allow myself one dinner out with my husband a week. This is the dinner I allow myself a sweet treat or an adult beverage or two;)
What impact has SOF had on your life?
SOF really has become a lifestyle for me. It has become as regular as brushing my teeth or putting my shoes on. I look forward to going to SOF 5-6 days a week and being with like minded people that just want to better themselves. It is so great to be in an environment that has people of all ages, sizes and strength levels. SOF and the trainers know just how to gently push, yet take any movement limitation into account. No comparisons, no unrealistic expectations, they just want me to be the best me I can be. I really love that.
Do you have a favorite SOF moment?
I have had so many fantastic moments that I can’t narrow it down to just one. I show up and feel challenged, appreciated and like I am part of a family.
What is your advice for people just getting started or thinking about starting SOF?
Do not be intimidated. We all started off questioning whether or not we could measure up to the fitness mold. Everyone gets a little something different out of their experience at SOF. However, I can absolutely guarantee you will get something out of it if you trust the trainers of SOF will help put you on your path. With their help
